Dubrovnik in Green: A Local’s Guide to Peaceful Parks, Gardens & Forest Trails

Hello dear travellers,

My name is Vesna, I live in Dubrovnik, and I love exploring the parts of the city that most visitors miss—especially when it comes to green spaces. If you’re looking for a place to escape the summer heat or crowds, here’s a local guide to Dubrovnik’s quieter, greener side.

Green spaces worth discovering

Lokrum – Botanical haven and nature’s sanctuary

Just a 15-minute boat ride from the Old Port, Lokrum is a protected nature reserve, home to a 19th-century botanical garden that features over 500 plant species from across the globe — from Aleppo pines and agaves to exotic palms. The garden is set beside the ruins of a Benedictine monastery. You can learn more about Lokrum here and here.

The island is ideal for peaceful strolls beneath the pines, a refreshing swim in the salt-filled Dead Sea, or simply observing the peacocks that roam freely. If you’re craving calm and nature, Lokrum never disappoints.

Gradac Park – History, executions, and dramatic views

Located just above Danče beach, Gradac Park offers sweeping views of Fort Lovrijenac and the Adriatic Sea. But beneath its pine trees lies a darker past — it’s situated near the site of a former 14th-century plague cemetery, and historical records confirm that executions of traitors to the Republic of Ragusa were once carried out here.

At the moment, the entire park is closed for renovation works scheduled to last until spring 2026. Still, it remains one of the most important natural terraces in the city, worth bookmarking for a future visit.

Hidden gardens and green city escapes

Dominican Monastery Garden – Calm behind the cloisters

One of the rare peaceful corners inside the Old Town, the Dominican Monastery courtyard is planted with citrus trees, rosemary, and lavender. Entry is ticketed and includes access to the monastery’s museum — so it’s not a spot you can enter freely, but the serene setting makes it worth the stop.

Excelsior Hotel Garden – Green views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town

One of the best panoramic views of the Old Town comes from the garden of Hotel Excelsior. Though it’s part of the hotel, the terrace and garden are accessible to restaurant and café guests. With carefully landscaped Mediterranean flora — oleanders, lemon trees, lavender — and the sound of waves, this is a peaceful green oasis overlooking Dubrovnik’s walls.

Babin Kuk & Petka Forest – A local favourite in modern Dubrovnik

To the west of the city lies Babin Kuk, home not only to hotels but also to one of Dubrovnik’s most authentic natural escapes: Petka Forest. With marked walking trails, views of the Elaphite Islands, and fresh air, it’s a beloved spot for locals to walk, run, or simply find stillness.

The hike to the top is short and gentle, and the reward is a silent panoramic view of the city and the sea.

Dubrovnik isn’t just stone and sea — its greenery tells a quiet story that locals know well. Next time you’re here, take a detour from the usual path and experience the city’s more peaceful side.

See you under the pines,
Vesna
