Peline – A Hidden Corner of Dubrovnik to Discover

If you’re looking to explore Dubrovnik from a different perspective, away from the usual tourist routes, let me take you to a place that holds a very special place in my heart: Peline. It’s not just a quiet street tucked beneath the northern walls of the Old Town—it’s the neighborhood where I grew up, where my father and grandfather lived before me, and where my family still resides. Every stone here tells a story, and every corner holds a memory.

A Climb Worth the Effort

You won’t stumble upon Peline by accident while strolling down Stradun, the city’s main street. Getting here requires a bit of effort—mainly climbing a fair number of stairs. But trust me, it’s worth every step. If you’d rather avoid the stairs, you can take a scenic walk around the city walls and enter through Buža Gate, an alternative entrance that immediately immerses you in a different side of Dubrovnik—quieter, more authentic, and far from the crowds.

What awaits you at the top is a Dubrovnik you won’t find in guidebooks—a place of tranquility, breathtaking views, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

A Neighborhood Steeped in History

The name Peline originates from the Latin pellillia, meaning “leather tannery.” Centuries ago, this area was home to Dubrovnik’s tanners, who worked on processing animal hides—a trade that, let’s just say, didn’t make this the most fragrant part of town!

Peline was even mentioned by Marin Držić, Dubrovnik’s most famous Renaissance playwright, who wrote that this street was home to women of questionable reputation. Today, however, it’s a charming and peaceful neighborhood, where history lingers in every stone, and the local way of life still thrives.

Lady PiPi – A Restaurant with a View

If you’re looking for one of the best panoramic dining experiences in Dubrovnik, Lady PiPi is the place to go. Located at the top of Peline, this restaurant is a favorite among locals and those lucky enough to discover it.

Imagine sitting under a vine-covered terrace, enjoying fresh seafood or grilled meat, while gazing over the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town and the shimmering Adriatic beyond. There’s only one catch—no reservations are accepted, and in peak season, the queue can be long. But I promise, it’s worth the wait.

The World’s Most Scenic Basketball Court

Peline is also home to what many call the world’s most scenic basketball court. Featured in numerous travel articles, this court offers a spectacular view over the city walls, the sea, and the surrounding islands.

Even if you don’t play basketball, take a moment to stand here and soak in the scenery—you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world.

A Scenic Walk Down to the Old Town

Once you’ve explored Peline, I recommend descending back into the city through Nalješkovićeva Street. Unlike the bustling Stradun, this picturesque alley is filled with hanging laundry lines (tiramoli), flower-covered balconies, and glimpses of local daily life.

It’s a street that feels untouched by time—a place where Dubrovnik’s true essence is preserved.

Dubrovnik’s Fortifications: A Journey Through Time

Peline is also the perfect starting point for exploring Dubrovnik’s famous city walls and fortresses. A short walk away is Minčeta Fortress, the highest point of the walls, offering unparalleled panoramic views. From there, you can continue along the walls to Bokar Fortress, which overlooks the sea.

Did you know that Dubrovnik was once famous for producing some of the best cannons in Europe? These fortifications were not only defensive structures but also home to workshops where skilled craftsmen forged weapons used throughout the Mediterranean.

Game of Thrones Fans, Take Note!

For Game of Thrones fans, Peline and the surrounding fortifications offer an extra treat. Several key scenes were filmed in this area, making it a must-visit spot for those who want to walk in the footsteps of their favorite characters.

Even if you’ve never seen the show, you’ll be mesmerized by the sheer beauty and history of these ancient walls.

Peline: A Neighborhood to Rediscover

Peline is not just another street in Dubrovnik—it’s a piece of history, a place of peace, and a glimpse into the city’s authentic life.

So, next time you find yourself in Dubrovnik, take a detour from the usual sights. Climb the steps, wander the quiet alleys, and let yourself be enchanted by Peline. It’s a place where history, beauty, and everyday life intertwine in the most magical way.

For me, Peline is more than just a neighborhood—it’s my childhood, my family’s story, and a part of Dubrovnik I love sharing with those who want to see beyond the tourist façade.

Until next time, happy exploring!
