DUBROVNIK WALKING TOURS
The Fall of Yugoslavia

Explore Dubrovnik’s turbulent past with a knowledgeable local guide on this unique tour dedicated to the war of 1991. Visit the War Museum located in the Imperial Fort atop Mount Srđ and learn about the events that shaped the city’s history.
1991 – The Start of the Croatian War of Independence
Between 1945 and 1991, Croatia was an official member of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, along with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Macedonia. In the spring of 1991, Croatia sought independence from the Federation, marking the beginning of the Croatian War of Independence.
The year 1991 was one of the darkest in Dubrovnik’s history, as it faced its first-ever attack. The city sustained significant damage but never lost its beauty. A pivotal date was December 6th, St. Nicholas’ Day, when Dubrovnik was bombarded for over 10 consecutive hours. That same day, Croatian forces halted the enemy’s advance, preserving the jewel of the Mediterranean.

Bring tissues, as the exhibits are deeply moving. The emotional highlight is the view from the lookout, where you’ll see a city that has risen from the ashes like a phoenix.

WELCOME
Fair liberty, beloved liberty, liberty sweetly avowed,
thou art the treasured gift that God to us endowed,
all our glory is thy true creation,
to our Home thou art all the decoration,
no silver nor gold, not life itself could replace
the reward of thy pure and sublime grace.
