Public transportation in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, a charming city on the Adriatic, is a perfect destination to explore on foot. From one end of the city to the other, you can walk the entire length in just about 60 minutes. If you are visiting Dubrovnik for a few days and wish to explore areas beyond the usual tourist spots, walking is an excellent way to discover the hidden gems of the city.

However, if you’d prefer to get around more quickly or want to visit areas further from the city center, Dubrovnik has an efficient public transportation system provided by Libertas, the city’s public transport company. The city’s buses are easily recognizable by their distinctive orange color, making it simple for tourists to spot them among the other vehicles.

Libertas City Bus Lines

Libertas operates 9 city bus lines, connecting various neighborhoods and key locations across Dubrovnik:

  1. Line 1A and 1B: These connect Dubrovnik to Mokosica, a district just outside the city. A useful tip: the largest and most affordable parking lot in Dubrovnik is located at the port of Gruž, where buses for these lines depart. If you’re traveling by car, this is a great place to park and take a bus to the Old Town.
  2. Line 3: This line connects the village of Nuncijata to Pile, which is also a great option for reaching the city center.
  3. Line 4: Connects Hôtel Palace to Pile. If you’re staying in the Lapad area or hotels like Vis, Splendid, Komodor, or More, this is the line for you.
  4. Line 5: This route links the Victoria area with Babin Kuk, a well-known district for hotels and private accommodations.
  5. Line 6: Perhaps the busiest route in Dubrovnik, this connects Babin Kuk, Lapad, and Pile, with buses running every 20 minutes.
  6. Line 7B: Connecting Kantafig to Babin Kuk, this line links the area with the port of Gruž, Dubrovnik’s main market, and the central railway station.
  7. Line 8: Another useful route that connects Kantafig with Victoria, passing through Gruž, the railway station, and the city’s commercial center.
  8. Line 9: This bus connects Pile to Medarevo, passing through the commercial district of Gruž and reaching Dubrovnik’s General Hospital.
  9. Line 17: Primarily intended for residents of Bosanka, this line also serves tourists who wish to explore nature and take a hike to the top of Srd.

The ticket is valid for 60 minutes, and during this time, you can transfer between buses as many times as needed. If you prefer, tickets can also be purchased at newsagents and Libertas kiosks for the same price.

For those staying in Dubrovnik for a few days, Libertas offers a 3-day ticket for €11.95 or a return ticket for €3.19.

Important Note About Dubrovnik Pass

It’s important to note that the Dubrovnik Pass includes bus tickets for local routes. However, suburban bus lines, such as those connecting Dubrovnik to Cavtat or Slano, are not included in the Dubrovnik Pass. These tickets must be purchased separately at a cost of €2.90 per trip. The Dubrovnik Pass is a great option for many of the city’s attractions, but for suburban transport, you will need to buy individual tickets.

Suburban Lines

In addition to the city routes, Libertas also operates several suburban bus lines connecting Dubrovnik to nearby areas:

  • Line 10: Dubrovnik to Cavtat, passing through Župa Dubrovačka.
  • Line 12: Dubrovnik to Slano, a charming tourist destination on the coastline.
  • Lines 16 and 16A: These lines link Dubrovnik with Plat and Srebreno, two main tourist centers in Dubrovnik’s Zupa.

Schedules for suburban lines depend on the day of the week and public holidays, so it’s advisable to check the timetable before your journey. Timetables and more detailed information are available on the Libertas website.
