Hello everyone!
Get ready for a splash of excitement — Dubrovnik is once again the proud host of the European Water Polo Championship, taking place from January 4 to 6, 2024. After the success of previous editions, the spotlight returns to our beautiful coastal city, turning it into the capital of world water polo for a few unforgettable days.
The tournament will be held at the VK Jug swimming pool, one of the most iconic sports venues in the region.
A Championship with the Best of Europe
Twelve top teams will compete, divided into two groups:
- Group A: Croatia, Spain, France, Montenegro
- Group B: Hungary, Italy, Serbia, Georgia
Croatia, the reigning European champion, will face Spain in the opening round, followed by a match against France. If victorious, they’ll move on to the semi-finals to battle the winner of Group B.
This is an incredible chance for Croatia to defend its title and showcase its unmatched strength in the sport.
Dubrovnik and Water Polo: A Love Story
Water polo isn’t just a sport here — it’s a way of life. Dubrovnik has a deep and proud tradition in water polo, and its clubs are among the most successful in Europe.
The city’s first water polo club was founded in 1911 under the name “Jadran”. After several name changes, it became the now-legendary VK Jug in 1954.
VK Jug is Croatia’s most decorated water polo club, with:
- 12 Croatian championship titles
- 10 Yugoslav championships
- 10 European titles
- 2 World championship titles
- A total of 7 EuroLeague titles, with the latest one in 2023
This isn’t just a team — it’s a symbol of the city, and its success is deeply woven into Dubrovnik’s identity.
The Famous Divlja Liga: Wild, Fun & Local
One of Dubrovnik’s most beloved summer traditions is the Divlja Liga, or Wild League — a local water polo tournament held every summer at Copacabana Beach in Gruž.
This informal competition brings together neighborhood teams, friends, and passionate players in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. Locals and tourists alike gather to watch the matches, cheer on their favorite teams, and enjoy water polo the way it was meant to be — under the sun, in the sea, and with lots of heart.
More Than a Sport: Water Polo in Dubrovnik’s Soul
From legendary clubs to fun summer competitions, water polo is part of the cultural fabric of Dubrovnik. It’s in our conversations, in our families, and in our daily lives. When people talk about sport in Dubrovnik, they talk about water polo — with pride, passion, and deep emotion.
Hosting the European Championship is not just a sporting event — it’s a celebration of who we are.
So whether you’re a lifelong fan, a casual spectator, or simply curious — don’t miss this chance to witness top-level water polo in one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
See you poolside!
