Accidentally Entered Dubrovnik’s Restricted Traffic Zone? Here’s What To Do

Hello dear readers!

So, you read my guide on how to drive and park in Dubrovnik, you had the best intentions, but… your GPS had other plans? Suddenly, you found yourself in the Restricted Traffic Zone (ZCR) of Dubrovnik, staring at a camera and a sign you didn’t quite catch?

Don’t worry — it happens more often than you think. Our medieval streets weren’t built for modern GPS, and navigation apps love to improvise near the Old Town walls. 😉

Don’t just visit—understand.

What exactly is Dubrovnik’s Restricted Traffic Zone?

The “zona posebnog režima prometa” refers to the streets immediately surrounding the Old Town, especially around Pile and Ploče gates, including the street Iza Grada.

It is strictly off-limits for non-authorized vehicles. Only locals with permits, delivery vans, and official taxis are allowed.
⚠️ Important: If you drive in without a permit, your license plate is automatically recorded by high-tech cameras.

I drove into the zone – What now?

First and most important: Don’t panic, but act quickly. Do not wait for the fine to arrive at your home address or through your rental agency (where they will add extra admin fees).

Send an email immediately to: 📧 zona@dubrovnik.hr

In your email, be polite and transparent. Make sure to include:

  • Clear mention that you are a tourist unfamiliar with the local rules.
  • The exact date and time of the incident.
  • Your license plate number (and rental agency name if applicable).
  • A brief explanation (e.g., following GPS, looking for parking, missed the sign).

The City of Dubrovnik traffic department is generally understanding toward proactive visitors who reach out before the system processes the fine.

What happens if I ignore it?

If you don’t reach out, a fine will likely be issued. If you are in a rental car, the agency will pay the fine and charge your credit card, often adding a significant administration fee (sometimes 30-50 EUR extra). It is always cheaper and better to be proactive.

Expert Tips to stay “Zone-Free”:

  • Trust your eyes, not just the GPS: If you see stone walls and no other cars, stop!
  • Use Public Parking: Aim for the large public garage at Ilijina Glavica. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk or a quick bus ride to the center.
  • Check our guides: Re-read my post on [How to drive and park in Dubrovnik] for a stress-free arrival.
  • Leave the car behind: The best way to see Dubrovnik is on foot. Once you’ve safely parked, let me show you the city without the traffic stress on one of my Private Walking Tours.

Dubrovnik may be strict with its traffic rules to protect our UNESCO heritage, but we are not heartless. Be quick, be honest, and you’ll be fine!

Warm regards from the sunny side of the walls,

Vesna
